The New York Police Department announced plans to ditch 36,000 Windows Phone devices and switch over to Apple’s iPhone. The move comes just two years after the department moved to Lumia devices instead iPhone or Android models as part of a $160 million mobility project.
The two main Windows devices that the NYPD purchased were the Lumia 640 XL and Lumia 830. In that time since, Windows announced it was pulling support for the platform.
Making the move to invest $160 million in Windows Phone was a very surprising choice, and blame is already being passed around. The New York Post is reporting sources close to the situation are putting blame solely on Deputy Commissioner for Information Technology Jessica Tisch.
Sounds like the NYPD should’ve consulted anybody remotely aware of the mobile landscape, who knew as far back as five years ago that Windows Phone lagged far behind iOS and Android devices.
But the snafu was made and now the switch is going to cost another egregious amount of money for New York tax payers.
