Apple brings back fan-favorite 3D Touch gesture

On Monday, Apple pushed out the iOS 11.1 beta 2 update to developers and public beta testers. The update added a few important features, including bug fixes and hundreds of new emoji. One of the more important added features is one Apple had previously removed—the 3D Touch app switch gesture.

When the official release of iOS 11 went live last month, Apple removed the 3D Touch app switcher for some unexplained reason, but software engineering chief Craig Federighi came out and said the feature would be returning in a later update. iOS 11.1 is that update, as the feature was added with the second beta version.

We still don’t know the reason for the removal of the feature, but we’re glad it has made its way back. Users can again firmly press on the left side of the iPhone while slowly swiping in from the left side of the display to access the app switcher. It’s a minor gesture but one that’s much more intuitive than double pressing the home button.

iOS 11.1 beta 2 is currently out to developer and public testers, with a final release likely to come next month.
