How to cope with a to-do list that never ends

Do you ever feel like making your way through your to-do list is a one step forward, two steps back kind of game?

My to-do list has been ever-increasing lately in preparations for a new baby. Every time I cross something off – assembling a crib, buying a new car – something even more daunting gets added. For example, we just found an electrical problem that will require some major work in the middle of decorating our new nursery.

And it’s not just the big ticket to-do items that feel never-ending. For ever dinner I successfully cook, there are the dishes to be done. I brought my winter clothes out only to discover I needed to buy more storage for my summer clothes. And on it goes.

I don’t have a secret answer to making household and life tasks easier, but I do think that I am starting to develop a better strategy for framing my thoughts around all the things I need, or even just want, to accomplish. The first step is stopping to check in with myself, which is advice I got from a therapist. I take a deep breath and think about what I really need. If that’s a break, I take a break. And then I try to remember two important things:

here, and check some flight prices if you’re planning on visiting far-away family this winter.
