Exclusive IMAX trailer reveals 'Superpower Dogs' who will save the world, steal your heart

“Superpower Dogs” finally pays respect to an overlooked breed of superhero: the four-legged variety.
The first IMAX film to focus on dogs, which reveals its first full trailer at usatoday.com before arriving March 15 in giant-screen theaters nationwide, highlights canines that are saving lives, fighting crime and making life better for humans around the world.
“I’ve heard tons of pitches for IMAX dog movies. But dogs are all over YouTube and TV. How do you create a story that belongs on an 8-story-high movie screen?” asks director Daniel Ferguson, who came around as he found worthy tales with wagging tails. “These dogs are real superheroes with epic powers we can only dream of and that we might take for granted.”

Narrator and noted dog lover Chris Evans, aka Captain America, gives respect to “the incredible working dogs who utilize their real-life superpowers to help and protect people.”Â
“Superpower Dogs” follows six pro canines doing their thing, with the main storyline following German shepherd Halo through three years of training in Miami. Working with her partner, Fire Captain Cat (yes, that’s her name) Labrada, Halo works to join the elite urban search and rescue team Florida Task Force 1.
As she grows from runt of the litter to top-notch star, “Superpower” swoops in on the stories of five other pooches including Reef, a powerful Newfoundland lifeguard executing water rescues with the Italian Coast Guard.
Surfing golden retriever Richochet, who works as a therapy dog for war veterans with PTSD and children with autism, rides the waves for her screen debut. Bloodhound duo Tipper and Tony show their supreme tracking skills to hunt down poachers in Kenya.Â
And the dashing, goggle-wearing border collie Henry is an avalanche rescue dog saving lives in the Canadian Rockies.

“He’s kind of the James Bond of dogs, dropping in from a helicopter to save people trapped in the snow,” Ferguson says.
When Evans showed up to record his narration, he was starstruck to meet Henry in the fur. Things got slobbery.
“Chris was totally seduced. That’s the power that dogs have,” Ferguson says.
“Superpower” ends with Halo and Labrada ready to be deployed on their first joint life-saving assignment. “The audience has followed Halo’s training. She’s made the hero’s journey and is ready to go off and save the world,” Ferguson says.
He sleeps better at night knowing that the pooches, and more like them, are at work.
“It’s given me a whole new appreciation for the dogs and the people who work with them to keep us safe,” he says. “They are dynamic duos.”
