Joe Alwyn turned to his Hamnet costars for help when he suffered a wardrobe malfunction on the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet.
Alwyn, 34, was posing for photos with Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Noah Jupe and Jacobi Jupe backstage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 11, when a button on his shirt broke, revealing his bare chest.
“S***,” he said, while Buckley, 36, joked, “Let’s get the party started!”
Director Chloé Zhao attempted to fix Alwyn’s button, but Noah, 20, had a better idea: standing in front of his costar to block the mishap from view. Alwyn hugged Noah from behind as the group continued to pose for photos.
The photoshoot came after Hamnet took home the award for Best Picture — Drama and Buckley won Best Actress in a Motion Picture. The film was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.
During Zhao’s acceptance speech for Hamnet, she recalled a message that Mescal, 29, shared with her earlier that day.
“Making Hamnet made him realize that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are and not who we ought to be. And to give ourselves fully to the world,” she said. “Even the parts of ourselves that we’re ashamed of, that we’re afraid of, that are imperfect, so the people that we speak to, they can also see themselves and fully accept themselves.”
Meanwhile, Buckley gushed about the movie’s diverse cast in her own acceptance speech.
“This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in but thank you Golden Globes,” Buckley said. “Focus [Features] and everybody who supported this film. Chloé, Paul, Maggie [O’Farrell, author], Emily [Watson], Jacobi, Joe and the 400 extras. I adore you. I would rave in that Globe for the rest of my life with you. It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew beside our British family.”
Hamnet is the film adaptation of O’ Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name. The story is a fictional retelling of the death of William Shakespeare (Mescal) and wife Agnes Hathaway’s (Buckley) 11-year-old son Hamnet (Jacobi). Shakespeare penned his famous play Hamlet amid the family’s grief.
Alwyn, who plays Agnes’ brother Bartholomew Hathaway in Hamnet, said during the film’s November 2025 premiere that the story is “painful and it’s sad and it’s heartbreaking, but it’s full of so much love.” He added that it promotes “the power of art and healing.”

During his appearance at the 2026 Golden Globes, Alwyn became the subject of online chatter as several Taylor Swift songs played throughout the night. (Alwyn and Swift, 36, dated for more than six years before their split was revealed in 2023.)
“Joe Alwyn having to hear The Fate of Ophelia 💀,” one person wrote via X after the opening track of Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl album played. “Shake It Off” made an appearance elsewhere in the show, while host Nikki Glaser — a proud Swiftie — walked out to “Style” before delivering her monologue.
“Nikki is terrorizing him with these songs 💀,” another user wrote.
