Warsh Vows to Tame Inflation as A.I. Delivers ‘Shock’ to Economy

Kevin M. Warsh, chairman of the Federal Reserve, reiterated his commitment to “deliver price stability,” amid rising energy prices and soaring investments in artificial intelligence, which he called a “shock” to the economy. But he did not convey an urgency for the central bank to raise interest rates at its meeting at the end of the month.

Mr. Warsh spoke Friday in Bangkok before a standing-room-only crowd at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He stuck to his approach to avoid giving specific guidance about what the Fed might do next in terms of policy adjustments.

“I don’t prejudge meetings. I don’t believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings we have in the balance of this year,” Mr. Warsh said. “It’s a new chapter at the Fed, and we’re not in that business anymore.”

The chairman conceded he would only “make some judgments at the October meeting and the December meeting,” the final two gatherings of the year.
