How to use Picture-in-Picture mode on Android 8.0 Oreo

Google didn’t really include anything monumental in Android 8.0 Oreo, but the latest version of its mobile operating system does have a handy feature for everyone. Picture-in-Picture mode allows one app’s content to exist on top of another app.

It’s not similar to the existing split-screen view by the way. Your phone’s display isn’t sharing space for two apps to be fully accessible at all times. What you’ll see instead is a little floating box that shows one app’s presence while another is completely open. Apps like YouTube and Google Maps are already taking advantage of Picture-in-Picture mode so that you can watch videos or get step-by-step directions while doing other things.

Here’s how to use Picture-in-Picture mode on Android 8.0 Oreo:

1. Make sure your phone (or tablet) is on Oreo and your YouTube app is updated
2. Open YouTube, choose a video you’d like to watch
3. After the video begins playing, go to your home screen or switch to another app
4. The video streaming from YouTube will continue playing regardless of what you do next
5. If you need a larger view or access to quick controls, tap the floating box
