Razzies aren’t a girl’s best friend.
“Blonde,” Netflix’s exploitative drama about Marilyn Monroe, is the “winner” of worst movie at the 43rd annual Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies), which cheekily honor the year’s most putrid performances and films. The NC-17-rated movie, which is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel, also picked up the trophy for worst screenplay.
The film’s Razzie recognition comes as Ana de Armas prepares for Sunday’s Academy Awards: She is nominated for best actress for her tragic turn as the late Hollywood starlet. But “Blonde” wasn’t the only movie to score double wins from the Razzies this year.
“Elvis” is vying for eight Oscars, including best picture, but picked up two Razzies for Tom Hanks. The beloved A-lister received the award for worst supporting actor for playing the mustache-twirling Col. Tom Parker, the despotic manager of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler). Hanks was also given worst screen combo for his use of heavy prosthetics and an even heavier accent.
“Morbius,” Sony’s Marvel antihero misfire, also made off with two awards for worst actor (Jared Leto) and worst supporting actress (Adria Arjona). The comic-book movie earned just 16% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and became a viral meme thanks in part to it flopping (and re-flopping) in theaters.
When the Razzie nominations were announced in January, the organization generated online blowback for nominating Ryan Kiera Armstrong, then 12, for worst actress for “Firestarter.” Razzies co-founder John Wilson rescinded the nod and apologized, adding that no one under 18 will be considered for future “awards.”
The Razzies doubled down on the apology by giving themselves the worst actress award, and “won by a landslide,” according to a press release.
Colin Farrell, a worst actor nominee for 2004’s “Alexander” but is now a best actor Oscar nominee for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The Razzies are voted on by roughly 1,000 film fans and industry members. After years of in-person ceremonies, winners are now announced via the organization’s YouTube channel.
