The first significant trade of the offseason — days before the Winter Meetings — is almost complete.

The San Diego Padres are on the verge of landing outfielder Tommy Pham from the Tampa Bay Rays for Hunter Renfroe, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the deal is pending physicals.

The Padres would also receive two-way prospect Jake Cronenworth while the Rays would get second base prospect Xavier Edwards, according to multiple reports.

The deal would help solidify the Padres’ crowded outfield and address its longstanding on-base problems.

Pham, 31, would fill in as the everyday left fielder and is under team control for the next two seasons. He hit .273 with and had a .369 on-base percentage last season. In five-plus seasons, Pham has accumulated a .373 on-base percentage — a mark no Padre player has reached since Chase Headley in 2012.

Tommy Pham hit .273 with and had a .369 on-base percentage last season.

As for Renfroe, he has hit more than 25 home runs in each of the last three seasons. In 2019, he led the Padres with 33 home runs and ranked second among MLB outfielders with 22 defensive runs saved. He doesn’t become a free agent until after the 2023 season.

Once the deal is completed, it will be the third trade in the past two weeks by Padres GM A.J. Preller. He acquired INF Jurickson Profar from Oakland on Monday and minor league OF Trent Grisham and RHP Zach Davies from Milwaukee on Nov. 27.
