LSU’s Ed Orgeron in position to reach at least $1.7 million in bonuses

Before becoming LSU’s interim head coach early in the 2016 season, Ed Orgeron was making $610,000 as the Tigers’ defensive line coach.

This season, his third as LSU’s full-time head coach, Orgeron already has racked up bonuses worth more than that.

And if the Tigers go on to win the College Football Playoff championship, he will end up with at least $1.7 million in incentive money. That would be the greatest single-season total in the six years USA TODAY Sports has been tracking the bonuses reached by Bowl Subdivision public-school coaches. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney picked up $1.525 million during the 2016 season, when those Tigers won the CFP title.

At $4 million in basic compensation from LSU this season, Orgeron is in the bottom half of the Southeastern Conference’s head coaches in terms of annual pay. But he has picked up $625,000 in bonuses, with $500,000 coming from a series of amounts for the team’s 10th, 11th and 12th regular-season victories.

A win in Saturday’s SEC championship game against Georgia would give him another $425,000 — $200,00 for winning that title and $225,000 for the team reaching the CFP semifinals. (Orgeron is assured of $25,000 for an appearance in an ordinary bowl game, and he is all but assured of an additional $125,000 for an appearance in one of the New Year’s Six games.)

If LSU were to win a CFP semifinal, he would get another $150,000 and have a chance to get $500,000 more by winning the final.

On top of all of this, Orgeron will get $25,000 if he is named SEC coach of the year and $50,000 if he wins any of five national coach of the year awards. He also is eligible for up to $200,000 based on the team’s academic performance.
