‘The pint has landed’: Guinness launches US-exclusive Over the Moon Milk Stout

Guinness is known for their traditional stout, Guinness Draught, made only in Dublin.

But on Thursday, the 260-year-old Irish brewery launched a new brew which will be available exclusively in the United States.

The Over the Moon Milk Stout, which arrives a little over  50 years after the first man landed on the moon, originated at Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore and can now be bought at stores throughout the mid-Atlantic and Massachusetts.

With it, they aim to “create what American Guinness will mean,” Hollie Stephenson, head brewer at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore, told USA TODAY.

The new stout has notes of roasted malt, caramel, coffee and chocolate along with a slightly sweet finish that is characteristic in many milk stouts.

The ABV, or alcohol by volume, is 5.3%.

Stephenson said that the Over the Moon Milk Stout is only the third product they’ve ever made at the storehouse.

A crowd-favorite in Baltimore since the taproom opened in August 2018, the stout was previously only available on-site before Thursday’s retail roll-out. Before Thursday, it was simply listed as “Guinness Milk Stout,” on tap.

Given Guinness’ storied history with stouts, Stephenson said the Open Gate team wanted to make a beer that would be authentic to Guinness while unique enough to recruit drinkers that may have moved on to different stouts.

The goal is to serve the “craft drinker palette,” she explained.

The style of the beer aligns with the characteristics of stouts currently in the craft market.

“Everything that we’re doing here is out of the traditional box,” Stephenson said of the Baltimore brewery. “Not to make the draft stout – that’s still only made in Dublin, the one everyone thinks of as Guinness. It’s a brewery to make new and innovative beers.”

Guinness has breweries all over the world. In fact, it’s brewed in 49 countries around the globe and is sold in more than 150. Nearly 9 million glasses of Guinness are consumed daily worldwide, the brewery notes in a release.

Many of those breweries have their own flavor from unique recipes, she said.

Americans, though, tend to think of Guinness only as an import brand, Stephenson said. But the Open Gate Brewery is beginning to change that, starting with the Over the Moon Milk Stout, a permanent addition to the Guinness beer family.

Right now, it is available regionally in the Baltimore area, as well as Virginia, Delaware, Massachusetts and New Jersey. It will be available nationally for a limited time starting in November through the end of the year. The suggested price for a 12-pack is $10.99.

In those regions, the beer will be a permanent addition to shelves that already house Guinness Draught, Guinness Blonde or Guinness Extra Stout.

And of course, you can still order it at the Open Gate Brewery.

“We’re very proud of this particular beer,” Chris McClellan, senior ambassador for Guinness Brewery, said at a launch event Thursday in New York. “(It) represents the past, present and future of Guinness.”
