Let Airbnb finance your dream home and Emmy winner Billy Porter might pay you a visit
Forget about staying in your dream home – now you can build the place of your dreams and get Airbnb to foot the bill for it.
Oh, and consider yourself warned: Emmy and Tony Award winner Billy Porter may be paying you a visit.
On Tuesday, Airbnb announced the “Unique Airbnb Fund,” a $1 million program that will finance the most unconventional, unique (and livable) spaces in the world.
People can submit their ideas to Airbnb from 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday through April 15. Ten winners will receive $100,000 each to help bring their ideas to life. The spaces will become the winners’ own personal residence.
Submissions are judged on creativity, feasibility, sustainability and their potential for social good.
“Where did the idea come from? What’s driving the dream of building this space and then what was the morsel of inspiration?” Porter said of the judging criteria. “Are you creating something that can actually be built or is it just a pipe-dream design? What’s the unique factor?”
Porter will be one of three judges, along with Kristie Wolfe, the host of Boise’s famed Big Idaho Potato Hotel, and a representative from the architecture firm MVRDV.
The “Pose” star is looking forward to seeing all the innovative ideas people come up with.
“I want to see what people come up with and maybe go and stay in some of these houses when they’re done,” said Porter, who’s recently taken an interest in all the unique housing ideas that are already out there.

“I’m just hearing about all this, you know these tiny houses I’ve been watching on TV, I didn’t know, I just discovered it like a couple months ago, it’s really interesting to me. I hear there’s a potato house out there somewhere,” Porter told USA TODAY, referencing Wolfe’s potato-shaped Airbnb in Idaho. “Maybe somebody might want to do a Mother Goose-themed house, who knows.”
Just a heads up: Porter would definitely stay in a Mother Goose house. But if he were entering the contest, what kind of place would he come up with?

“I would go all out and I would probably make it some sort of music studio conversion space,” he said. “Like a dance studio/music studio, like how could you put all those kinds of things in one place where you could go and just be creative in this house in any way that you can wanted to be. Maybe like an art space inside of it as well – an artist colony space.”
