WhatsApp dropping support for multiple platforms next month

It seems that some users are going to find themselves unable to use WhatsApp as soon as the calendar rolls over to 2018.

Instant messaging darling WhatsApp has announced that it is cutting support for BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 as well as Windows Phone 8.0 and older after Dec. 31, 2017. The first thing users will discover is they will be unable to create new accounts or re-verify existing ones. Going forward the app will still work on those operating systems, but at some point they will be completely discontinued.

Also announced, but with further out sunsetting dates were Nokia S40 will continue support through Dec. 31, 2018 and Android versions 2.3.7 and older until Feb. 1, 2020.

While it’s never fun to lose support of your favorite apps, it’s understandable from the company’s side of things. You have to imagine the userbase for some of these platforms have dwindled greatly and the amount of money spent supporting them just simply outweighs the return.

If you’re a loyal WhatsApp user and are impacted by any of these cutoffs the company recommends uprading to such as Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+.
