We’re getting around to it, I promise. My Switch is on the other side of the planet at the moment, and it won’t be in my hands until the end of March. However, critics who have had the chance to go exploring with Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are universally calling it one of the greatest video games of all time.
Game of the Year is for small fries. Nintendo is going to sweep the critics’ award season in 2017. After 62 reviews, as of writing, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sits high and mighty with a score of 98 on Metacritic, a score it shares with only three other games: Grand Theft Auto IV, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and SoulCalibur. The only game with a higher score is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time which sits at 99.
Likewise, over at Gamerankings, The Legend of Zelda is at the very top of the all-time greats list with a score of 98.05% after 37 reviews. It cleared the top-ranked Super Mario Galaxy, which has a score of 97.64%, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time‘s 97.54%. On Gamerankings, Nintendo currently owns four of the top five games with Grand Theft Auto IV coming in with the fifth place spot.
