Movie magic is great until your pants tap out before you do — take that lesson from Chris Pratt, who shared a hilariously candid story about his brother Cully Pratt‘s wardrobe malfunction while filming his cameo in Mercy.

“He gets killed,” Chris, 46, explained on the Thursday, January 16, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, revealing that Cully’s character was shot in one scene of the upcoming sci-fi drama.

“So he’s wearing a Mercy security outfit and they put the squibs on the pants. The squibs are these little explosive devices that shoot blood out if you get shot in a movie,” the Electric State star explained, raving over his sibling’s acting chops. “He does a great job — gets blasted, lays down, has to be dead for like three minutes in this scene.”

Chris said things went awry when Cully had to reshoot the scene in much smaller bottoms. Apparently, his brother already had an inclination that something would go down, but never imagined that it would happen in a literal sense.

“They gave him a size of pants that’s like two sizes too small,” Chris recounted. “He’s like, ‘Dude, these pants are, like, so tight, bro.’ I was like, ‘It’s fine, it’s fine.’ He was like, ‘I don’t know, man. I gotta do this stunt. I gotta fall. The pants are so tight!’”

The Jurassic World actor tried to assure his brother that everything would be fine, and to just play dead and not worry too much.

“[Cully] does the scene and boom, boom, boom, he runs back, does the stunt, and he falls in an elevator, and the elevator is going to be closing like this on his head,” Chris said, revealing Cully’s character went commando for some unbeknownst reason and ended up flashing way more skin than he anticipated. “As [Cully] goes down, [he] rips his pants from, like, the top of his ass crack to, like, above his pubes.”

Chris added, “He’s [getting hit by the elevator doors] like, ‘Uhh, my d***’s out.’”

Chris shared the wild story leading up to the film’s release next week. Mercy is about a detective who stands trial for murdering his wife, facing an AI judge, where he has only 90 minutes to prove his innocence or be left to face the consequences.

In October 2025, Pratt spoke about his acting techniques while playing the detective, revealing that he requested to be strapped to a chair for the filming of his courtroom scenes during New York Comic Con.

“I asked them to confine me in it,” he said on the panel alongside costar Kali Reis and director Timur Bekmambetov. “So I couldn’t, I didn’t have to pretend that I was strapped down.”

Chris admitted, “There’s a certain level of claustrophobia that you just naturally feel when you’re strapped down to something, and that was helpful, in fact.”

Mercy hits theaters on Friday, January 23.
