Telecom ‘visionary’ and owner of Shaw Communications dies during 85

JR Shaw, a owner of Shaw Communications, has died during age 85.

The Calgary idealist and colonize of a telecommunications universe died peacefully on Monday, a association pronounced in a recover on Tuesday.

Shaw founded Capital Cable Television Co. Ltd. in 1966, initial rising in Edmonton. The association fast grew underneath Shaw’s leadership.

JR Shaw stepped down from a CEO purpose in 1998, flitting on a reins to his son, Jim Shaw. Brad Shaw took over in 2010 from Jim, who died in 2018.

In light of his father’s death, Brad Shaw will take over his purpose of executive chair of a board.

Today, Shaw Communications Inc. has some-more than 7 million subscribers between cable, internet, phone, satellite and wireless service, mostly in Western Canada.

JR Shaw warranted many accolades, including apropos an officer of a Order of Canada, a target of a Alberta Order of Excellence and mixed titular degrees.

Notes of condolences flooded in on amicable media, including from Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, who on Twitter called Shaw one of a province’s “titans of business and philanthropy.”

Also on Twitter, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi recounted his initial assembly with a “true Calgary business personality and pioneer.”

“I remember assembly him a few years ago and being struck by how impossibly intelligent he was and a really tough questions he asked,” a mayor said. “He will be deeply missed.”

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association also called him an attention leader, and former B.C. premier Christy Clark reflected on her time as a Shaw house director.

“JR Shaw was one of a few good business titans who weave this nation together,” Clark wrote on Twitter. “He showed us how to attain while respecting competitors, caring about employees and giving behind to communities.

“It was one of my life’s good privileges to work with him.”
