Iconic Square Enix director Akitoshi Kawazu talked a big game on delivering his cult-classic Romancing SaGa series in the West. The Super Famicom series, considered the peak of the overall SaGa franchise by enthusiasts, has long evaded Western shores with English patches often coming up short, and Kawazu suddenly decided he didn’t like that. His promise to modernize the series on home consoles gave longtime Japanese fans hope of playing it again, but Kawazu actually went the extra mile and declared that Western fans would get their very first crack at the 25-year-old game in turn.
It takes quite a lot for a Japanese developer to make such promises to Western fans, especially with all of the corporate nonsense that often clouds the industry, so we should all thank Kawazu for speaking out.
And now, we can thank him for delivering! Romancing SaGa 2 is now available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS Vita, PC, and (sweet) the Nintendo Switch! Hot dog! This is the first time a Square Enix classic will hit the Switch in the Western world, although Japan does have the Secret of Mana Collection that we never got.
