Those slick 16-bit graphics and sweet early 90s beats aren’t all that Sonic Mania is bringing back into the traditional formula. Those of us who gamed on the series way back when remember being whisked away at the checkpoints, and it was then that we learned of the importance of “secret stages†and how they help you unlock those pesky Emeralds.
Once you turn into Super Sonic, it’s game over, man!
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic CD all had their original spins on the idea, but each special stage style relied on memorization, quick reflexes, and perfect execution. One mistake and it’s all over! Fans have wanted to see these stages return to the series, and screenshots revealed at Comic-Con this weekend gives the briefest of looks into this welcome rejuvenation.
Collect 50 rings and get magically whisked away to this!

As you can see, it looks familiar, and yet, it’s a totally brand new setup as well. A fast paced, reflex based 3D stage is exactly what fans are looking for. I’ll never forget those twists and turns for as long as I live.
SEGA also teased the special stage’s new theme song as well as confirmed an opening animation inspired by Sonic CD and cutscenes similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Sonic Mania launches for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on Aug. 15.
