Samsung Galaxy S9 event set for end of February

Samsung on Wednesday confirmed the Galaxy S9 will officially be announced on Sunday, February 24.

The company sent out invites to press and Tweeted a short teaser, hinting the device’s camera will be reimagined. It’s unclear how the camera will differentiate from last year’s Galaxy S8, though a few previous leaks could provide key details.

The S9 isn’t expected to be a huge refresh for the lineup, though rumors suggest the device’s camera will feature a “Super Speed Dual Pixel” camera with a variable aperture (f/1.5 and f/2.4) The technology will allow the camera to be more dynamic and adapt to different shooting situations.

The smaller aperture will be great for low light situations and achieving shallow depth of field. The larger f/2.4 aperture will likely be used for more general shooting, such as of landscapes. According to a leak of a Galaxy S9 retail box, the camera will feature a 12-megapixel sensor.

Outside of an improved camera, the Galaxy S9 is expected to look similar to the Galaxy S8, with a fingerprint sensor below the camera sensor rather than beside it. Meanwhile, specs may include a Snapdragon 845 chip, 4GB of RAM, IP68 water and dust resistance, and an improved iris scanner.
