Now you can talk to Google Assistant on your TV

Ready to talk to your television? The digital assistant from Google is live on Android TV. Set-top boxes and televisions powered by Android TV are starting to gain access to Google Assistant. It debuts today with one set-top box, and likely throughout 2018 we’ll see Google Assistant arrive on many more home entertainment devices.

Accessing Google Assistant on your television is as easy as holding the remote’s mic button.

Google says its digital assistant can do things like play specific content from different services, check up on news, display information including weather and reminders, control connected home products, and answer questions.

If you’d like to use Google Assistant on Android TV today, you’ll need to own an NVIDIA SHIELD TV. That’s the only device with support right now. Sony’s Bravia televisions, however, are next in line and should gain access to Google Assistant in the coming months. Unfortunately Google hasn’t said when any other Android TV-powered set-top boxes or televisions will add Google Assistant.

To celebrate the arrival, Google is giving all SHIELD TV owners a free three-month YouTube Red trial. It provides you with ad-free videos as well as unlimited music streaming through Play Music.
