New Super Mario Bros. enjoyed a string of mainstream commercial success with four games back in the days of the Nintendo DS, Wii, and Wii U. However, after the first game, fans failed to jump aboard and eventually got tired of the formula, something that rarely happens with Super Mario games.
If there is one game in the series that deserves a re-release, it’s this one. Super Mario Bros. U in HD looks fantastic, and the addition of an overworld rings similar to branching paths and loads of secrets, similar to Super Mario World. New Super Luigi U also cranks up the platforming formula and drops the focus on multiplayer, making for a fun expansion that never feels basic or simple.
We’ll see if the Nintendo Switch rumor pans out, but in any case, it’s great to see a generation of Nintendo games no longer be stuck on the company’s poorest performing piece of hardware.
