Met Gala Announces Unconventional 2027 Theme After John Galliano Controversy

The 2027 Met Gala is embracing a brand-new, unconventional theme following controversy surrounding its original plan to honor designer John Galliano.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed on Thursday, November 5, that “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” will be curated by Andrew Bolton alongside Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben.

The theme asks individuals “to see the everyday anew” and focuses on elevating simple garments including T-shirts and jeans, while also exploring how “disposable” materials can become wearable art.

“I didn’t have a plan B,” Bolton, 60, told Vogue. “It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily. I wanted it to be as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John show would have been.”

He continued, “That was really important to me: to come up with an idea that wasn’t a substitute. And it had to have some sort of contemporary resonance.”

After the Met Gala on May 3, the exhibit will open to the public from May 9 to January 9, 2028. The new theme comes two months after Galliano, 65, stepped back from the 2027 Met Gala exhibition, which was originally themed “John Galliano: Horizons.”

“I am profoundly grateful to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and particularly to Max Hollein, Andrew Bolton and Anna Wintour, for the extraordinary honour of proposing an exhibition devoted to my work,” his official statement read in August. “To have my creative journey considered by an institution that I have admired throughout my life moved me more deeply than I can express. I will remain forever grateful for the confidence, care and scholarship that Max, Andrew, Anna and the entire Met team brought to this project.”

He continued, “After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.”

The announcement of Galliano’s involvement in the 2027 Met Gala received backlash due to his previous antisemitic and racist comments.

“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry,” he wrote in his statement. “I understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one’s conduct over time.”

Galliano went on to note that he did “not want the debate surrounding him” to put the Metropolitan Museum of Art “in a difficult position” or take away from the Costume Institute. Wintour supported the decision.

“John’s decision to ask the Museum to postpone the exhibition devoted to his work is very courageous and a measure of the man he is,” she said in a statement at the time. “I believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support.”
