Fire Hopping essentially works as players hopped back and forth after getting the maximum drift boost. Those hops would increase speed just enough to catch up, pass and further separate Fire Hoppers from normal drivers.
The folks at GameXplain have an early copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and they put Fire Hopping to the test. In the video at the base of this post, not only do they effectively show that Fire Hopping has been removed, but attempting the exploit actually slows drivers down to speeds less than their opponents who are drifting normally.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will launch on April 28, 2017, for the Nintendo Switch.
