Is Huawei dropping the Mate 10 for the Mate X?

Maybe the next trend in the mobile industry will have to do with names. Huawei could call its upcoming flagship the Mate X rather than the Mate 10. This rumor comes from Evan Blass, who says he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the name was tweaked to switch from a number to a Roman numeral.

Here’s the tweet from the VentureBeat mobile reporter:

If the Mate 10 will become the Mate X, that likely means the Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Lite are due for changes as well. Huawei probably wants to keep branding similar across the three phones, suggesting the others will become the Mate X Pro and Mate X Lite.

It wouldn’t be the first time a company has embraced Roman numerals. Up until the Galaxy S5 in 2014, Samsung used only Roman numerals for its flagships. And, this year, Apple introduced the iPhone X as its first phone to not have a regular number in the name. But Apple did use Roman numerals for macOS when it was still known as OS X. Apple is returning to Roman numerals now, and Huawei is jumping in on the hype.

Huawei’s trio of new phones are expected be announced on Monday, October 16.
