It appears the 14-year wait was worth it for Incredibles 2, which delivered a record-breaking opening weekend. Taking in $182 million at the domestic box office, Incredibles 2 shattered expectations while handily shattering the previous animated movie opening weekend record by a giant margin.
Back in 2016, Finding Dory set the record for biggest animated movie opening weekend with $135 million. Incredibles 2 was expected to top the record by a slim margin, yet the response turned out to be much more voracious than anticipated.
Here’s how Incredibles 2 stands against the all-time animated movie openings.
In blowing past animated comparables, Incredibles 2 joined the rare group of biggest domestic openings of all-time. Its $182 million puts it as the eighth biggest opening of all-time, passing the likes of Captain America: Civil War ($179 million) and Beauty and the Beast ($174 million). Coincidentally, Incredibles 2 also gave Disney the distinction of owning 10 of the 11 biggest domestic openings of all-time.
Moving forward, if it follows the current trajectory it’s on, Incredibles 2 is looking to become the highest grossing animated movie domestically (exceeding $500 million) and worldwide (exceeding $1.02 billion).
Its performance will be buoyed by the glowing reviews the movies has received, which should let it perform well in the long run.
