Former NASA wanderer brings lessons for Metro Vancouver’s 0 rubbish goals

Cady Coleman spent months vital on a International Space Station, relying on intensely singular resources with tiny place for waste.

The former NASA wanderer is now regulating her singular viewpoint from space to essay for sustainability on Earth. She’s bringing her insights about some of those hurdles and solutions to Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Conference on Wednesday.

Coleman compared life aboard a spaceship, reusing and recycling everything, to some of a 0 rubbish and sustainability goals of Vancouver. There are many similarities and lessons that can be drawn, she told CBC’s horde of On The Coast, Stephen Quinn.

“Recycling a air, a water, training how to grow plants in a place where it’s tough to do that — those are stairs removing us prepared to go to Mars, though they are also unequivocally critical for nutritious us here on Earth,” Coleman said.

Reengineering problems

On a tiny spaceship, Coleman said, removing absolved of rubbish is a challenge, and so it forced her to rethink a ways things like packaging are designed.

Packing foam, she said, was a “bane of her existance” adult in space. Instruments would come finished with hulk pieces of foam, though once unwrapped, there was no use for a packaging.

“[The instrument] doesn’t need to live in this easy sourroundings in a big, hulk retard of foam,” she said. “So we had to figure out what to do with that and we’d consider ‘Why do we even have to do it that way?'”

It’s a matter of reengineering a problem, Coleman concluded, and that’s what she wants to prominence during Vancouver’s sustainability conference.

“Instead of only reckoning out what to do with rubbish once we make it, how do we pattern things differently so we don’t have that waste?” she said.

“These are tough problems and they are interdisciplinary,” she said. “In sequence to solve these problems, people have to work together that would never consider of operative together.”
