First impressions of the Nintendo Switch—a portable marvel to behold

Nintendo Switch day has finally arrived!

After months of anticipation, the Nintendo Switch is now in our hands. And oh boy is it a sweet console. Nintendo really took its time refining this system that needed to be good after the Wii U failure.

Right off the bat, the crowning achievement of the Switch is its slim design. Nintendo’s long legacy of portable devices dating back to the Gameboy is on full display with its latest console. Inside the box is the Switch console, Joy Con controllers (left and right), Switch dock, Joy Con straps, Joy Con grip, HDMi cable and Switch AC adapter.

The device feels really good. We have a Wii U in the office we compared the two side by side and the improvements are striking. It’s slimmed downed, powered up and super portable now. This makes everything about the Switch endearing. From the noise the Joy Cons make when they click in to the movement of the joy sticks, everything feels solid in the hand. The only gripe I have with the Switch is the ergonomics when in handheld mode. It’s a little cramp and flat back side provides little grip. This is the only area the Wii U beats it handily.

We got our hands on the Gray version, but there is also a Neon alternative that features the colorful blue and red Joy Cons.

Setting it up is pretty simple. Just turn on the console and you’r pretty much ready to go. The transition between handheld and the dock is quite seamless too. The dock doesn’t have a power button; it turns on automatically when the console is inserted.

The only real knock there is on the Switch is its bare-bones game line-up at launch. In total there is 12 games, but only The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch are the notable titles. The others aren’t that impressive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, FIFA, NBA 2K and Ultra Street Fighter II will come out some time later this year, but you still have to wait at least another month for those titles.

First impressions of the Switch are really good so far. Once we get to test it more and play The Legend of Zelda, we’ll bring you a full review.
