Even amidst backlash, The Last Jedi is still ruling box office

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hasn’t quite enjoyed the fan gushing The Force Awakens elicited. Heck, a large contingency of fans revolted against director Rian Johnson for some of his creative decisions. But even amidst all of this backlash, The Last Jedi is still ruling the box office handily.

Over the long four-day Christmas weekend, The Last Jedi raked in $100.6 million at the domestic box office. The gigantic cume was plenty enough to easily beat out the flurry of newcomers. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took second place with $52.1 million and Pitch Perfect 3 earned $25.6 million in third place. Here’s how the top five breaks down:

  1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi – $100.6 million
  2. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – $52.1 million
  3. Pitch Perfect 3 – $$25.6 million
  4. The Greatest Showman – $14 million
  5.  Ferdinand – $9.6 million

The Last Jedi’s impressive performance isn’t just from the domestic box office, it’s also dominating around the world. Worldwide, the latest Star Wars installment has brought in $396 million. That, combined with the $397 million it has already earned stateside, its total gross now stands at a lumbering $793 million. And what’s more impressive, that number will continue to rise over the next few weeks. It’ll reach $800 million within a day, and then easily eclipse the $1 billion soon after. The only question now is if it’ll come close to $2 billion.

Fan negativity aside, Lucasfilm has another monster hit on its hands with Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
