Early Aquaman screentests are overwhelmingly positive

With most of a year to wait for its theatrical release, Aquaman is sure to undergo tons of changes and tweaks before it gets in front of our eyes. For it to have such positive word this early seems like a good sign.

For all the criticism of Zack Snyder with regard to the Superman-centric movies that started the DCEU, his choice to cast Jason Momoa as Aquaman seems like an inspired choice.

While Aquaman is well-known in pop culture, it’s mostly as a dork who talks to fish. Jason Momoa, on the other hand, has established an aura of badass through roles like Conan of Cimmeria, Khal Drogo of the Dothraki, and he was one of the bright points of the middling Justice League in his debut as fish-talker Arthur Curry.

All of this positions Momoa to help rewrite the conversation around the character the same way Robert Downey Jr. helped elevate Iron Man from just another member of the Marvel universe to the headliner of the MCU, starring in three of his own films and leading another three-plus.

The DCEU is struggling, but it doesn’t have to be. More movies like Wonder Woman and hopefully the upcoming Aquaman and we could be back on track.

We’ll know more when Aquaman hits theaters on December 21. 2018.
