Dragon Quest XI sells 2 million in two days, that’s absurd in 2017
For comparison’s sake, Final Fantasy XV was the PlayStation 4’s biggest launch to date and managed a respectable 1,017,348 copies after its 48 hours. Dragon Quest XI, as we know, is split up over two different versions. The Nintendo 3DS build soared past that number with 1,130,468 sales, and the PlayStation 4 version came up a little short at 950,338 copies.
In total, the two builds combined for 2,080,806, as reported by Famitsu. The sales numbers only include July 29 and July 30.
You can’t keep that Dragon Quest down… unless you speak English
Ultimately, Dragon Quest VII, VIII, and IX would go on to be some of the best-selling video games of all time in Japan. Dragon Quest VII sold 4 million on the PlayStation, and its remake managed 1.3 million on the Nintendo 3DS. Dragon Quest VIII sold nearly 3.5 million on the PlayStation 2, and Dragon Quest IX remains the champion at 4.5 million copies.
Dragon Quest XI isn’t quite there yet, and if we are looking at individual builds, then it might never be able to match its predecessors. However, Dragon Quest has also always been a slow-burn to success with those numbers stretch out over a year or so. We’ll have to sit back and watch as this one climbs into the record books.
Again, this might not seem like a big deal, but it’s always refreshing to see a staple of gaming thrive in this vicious modern day world.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of the Elusive Age will be released in North America in 2018. Square Enix has yet to confirm which platforms we’ll be getting it for, but trailers for the PlayStation 4 version have been pulled since the announcement. I’m pretty sure we’ll be getting that one. It’s just a matter of Nintendo of America playing ball nicely with others to pitch in for the Nintendo 3DS version and eventual Nintendo Switch build as well.
All we can say with certainty is that it won’t sell 2 million here.
