Deadpool can keep his R-rating at Disney

As the announcement of the Disney deal with Fox approached, one of the biggest questions of the fallout wasn’t the price, it was whether Deadpool could still be rated R.

The short answer? Yes.

Speaking with investors on Thursday morning, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that he didn’t see this as an issue. “It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool,” said Iger. “As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

The first Deadpool film released in 2016 and went on to earn $783M at the global box office, making it the highest gross of any X-Men film from Fox. Logan released in March of 2017 and took in $616M globally with an R-rating. Neither of those box office grosses will be easy to ignore for Disney should the deal go through.

Shortly following the merger news, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds took to his Twitter to make a joke at the expense of Disney.

The acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney is expected to take 12 to 18 months to close. With Deadpool 2 releasing on June 1, 2018, Disney more than likely won’t be involved quite yet eliminating any concerns with that project. As to a potential Deadpool 3, that will be when the true test comes as to what Disney will allow from the Merc with a Mouth.
