Apple rivals slam company over slowing iPhone controversy

After Apple admitted to slowing down old iPhones, some of the Cupertino company’s fiercest rivals are responding to the controversy. In statements to The Verge, both Motorola and HTC confirmed they don’t slow down old devices.

The responses are noteworthy because it addresses whether or not the practice is common across the industry. We still don’t have a definitive answer as to whether or not Apple is the only one—Google, Samsung, LG, and Sony have yet to confirm or deny throttling old phones—but we at least know that not all companies are doing it.

Apple last week confirmed it slows down old iPhones to preserve aging batteries and thus prevent random shutdowns. Users first became suspicious of the practice after noticing their phones got significantly faster once the batteries were replaced. Apple released a statement shortly after mounting evidence proved something was going on.

It makes sense as to why Apple is slowing down old devices; it’s just baffling the company wasn’t upfront with users about it. And the fact that iPhone batteries are difficult to replace has led a lot of people to believe that Apple is slowing down old iPhones so people will upgrade to a more current model.

Although HTC and Motorola say they don’t slow down older devices, does that come with any risks? Apple claims it does this to prevent devices from randomly shutting down and thus extend their usability, even if it does come at a cost of a slower phone.

With other companies now chiming in, this won’t be the last time we hear about Apple slowing down old iPhones.
