Amid backlash, T-Mobile drops price of LTE data for Apple Watch Series 3

T-Mobile has listened to customer backlash and brought down the price of the Apple Watch Series 3 LTE data plan to $10.

On Friday, T-Mobile announced that the Apple Watch Series 3 on its network would be neutered to 512kbps speeds for the standard $10 plan. That’s 3G speeds, and a long cry from the LTE connectivity Apple is touting. If customers want the faster speeds, they would have to pony up $20 for a more expensive plan with LTE connectivity.

Naturally, customers weren’t happy about this and they let T-Mobile know it.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere responded late last night that he’d listen to customer feedback and brought down the price of the Apple Watch Series 3 LTE data plan to $10.

It’s a great way to save face, but we have to give T-Mobile credit. Every other network would have likely taken the criticism with the extra money and gone home. Not T-Mobile, and that should be commended.

John Legere has positioned T-Mobile as the disruptor of big networks. Moves like this show he puts his money where his mouth is, and it’s a great win for customers.

So far, T-Mobile is the only company that has been transparent about the data plans for the Apple Watch Series 3. Every other network already announced $10 data plan, but none went into specifics about the speeds and if they were adopting a similar tactic as T-Mobile before the roundabout.

It seems highly unlikely that other carriers would charge a premium for LTE after what they’d seen happen to T-Mobile, but stranger things have happened.
