Close to 100 countries are competing at the Winter Olympics in Beijing with nearly 3,000 athletes representing them.
A total of 109 events will be held in 15 disciplines across seven sports: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing. Twelve different venues, split between the zones of Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, will be used during the 17 days of the Games.

Norway has been the most successful nation at the Winter Olympic Games since they began in 1924, having amassed a total of 368 medals before Beijing. The United States followed Norway in the medal count with 305.
