Chappell Roan’s look at the 2026 Grammy Awards was all about pushing boundaries.
The “Red Wine Supernova” singer’s makeup artist, Andrew Dahling, said that she channeled a “Mugler medieval fantasy” by wearing prosthetic nipples and faux tattoos for the red carpet held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 1.
Roan (real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) commanded attention when she arrived nearly topless, wearing a flowing maroon gown that skimmed her body for her big night. The chart-topping performer, 27, was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year for her latest single, “The Subway.”
From the front, her dress was designed to shock, with sheer fabric exposing her undergarments as it draped from her nipple rings. The back of the gown plunged down low, displaying her temporary ink. She completed her look with a matching sheet cape with gold accents at the collar and a pair of strappy heels.
Roan’s look was enhanced by faux ink, including a sizable woven-inspired floral piece that was placed above her real “Princess” tattoo and temporary art on the center of her chest. She has several permanently etched designs on her body, including a swan and flowers on her arm.
“There was so much going on — the tattoos, the prosthetic nipples, all of it, but overall we wanted everything to feel cohesive and really honor the dress and the medieval world we were living in,” Dahling told Marie Claire.
The glam guru — who is in partnership with MAC Cosmetics, where Roan serves as the Global Brand Ambassador — said her makeup was scaled down to let the dress steal the show.
“We started with this very archival, full, bare moment,” Dahling said. “Once the tattoos came into play, everything became very medieval, but in a real way. It’s still fantasy and something otherworldly, but grounded.”
Her deep red hair was styled in tousled curls with braided strands throughout, and she wore a gold choker as well as matching dangling earrings.
“We still wanted to bring some Chappell and some glam to it, so we added a little bit of MAC metallic liner detail just to bring some pop and some glamour and glitz to her eyes to tie in with the jewelry,” he shared, revealing they opted for a “nude-red” lip color.

“This makeup may be a little underwhelming and unexpected for her fans who expect something extremely intense,” he continued. “But it was about honoring the history, the designer and the direction [her stylist] Genesis created. We wanted to let other elements of the look shine.”
Dahling said they used shadow sticks, dazzle shadows and lavender blush for her second look when she hit the stage to present the Best New Artist award. She changed into a Rodarte number for the broadcast.
“It’s giving drama, but in a very quick, cool-girl way,” he highlighted of her glam. “It’s about shape to the eyes — glamour, glitz, metallics in strategic places to make her eyes pop,” Dahling explained. “Cool tones, lots of cool tones — lavenders.”
