Norway came into the Beijing Olympics with 368 medals: 132 gold, 125 silver and 111 bronze medals, according to Olympedia. The U.S. came into the Winter Games with 305: 105 gold, 112 silver and 88 bronze medals.
Team USA came in fourth in the overall medal count during the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang with 23 medals, behind Norway (39), Germany (31) and Canada (29).
Even before Friday’s opening ceremony, the Beijing Games had been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic with a rising number of cases linked to the Winter Games.
Several American athletes – including a pair of bobsledders, Elana Meyers Taylor and Josh Williamson – tested positive for COVID-19 before the Games opened.
