Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the panel, raised the tide of concerns about artificial intelligence, which has coincided with a push — even in Silicon Valley — for a slowdown in development to account for the risks of the technology. Bessent was fairly dismissive, saying at one point: “They can stop any time they want to.” He later defended the Trump administration’s efforts to oversee A.I., arguing that it had been at the “forefront of examining the models.”
President Trump has largely rebuffed calls for new regulation of the technology, and recently, he called some worries about A.I. a “hoax.”
