Daniel Snyder’s sale of the Washington Commanders is approaching the finish line.
A group led by billionaires Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales has reached “an agreement in principle” to acquire the team from Snyder for about $6 billion, according to multiple reports.
Sportico first reported the news Thursday. Multiple news media outlets added that the two sides were “nearing” a deal but it had not been finalized.
The $6 billion sale, when executed, would crush the previous record sale price for an NFL franchise. Rob Walton and Greg Penner bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion last year.
A team spokesperson said the Commanders “aren’t in a position to comment” on the potential sale. NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy declined commend.
Harris, 58, owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and has an estimated net worth of $6 billion, according to Forbes. Rales, 66, has a net worth of roughly $5.7 billion. Both men have deep ties to the greater Washington area and attended high school there.
NBA legend Magic Johnson is also known to be part of the bidding group.
The reported agreement comes one day after news emerged that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos would not submit a bid.
