Report: Denver Broncos hire 28-year-old Davis Webb as Russell Wilson’s QB coach

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson will be older than his new QB coach when the 2023 NFL season begins, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton is hiring 28-year-old Davis Webb — who spent last season as QB Daniel Jones’ backup with the New York Giants — to be the new quarterbacks coach in Denver, Schefter reported Thursday.

Wilson, an 11-year veteran entering his second season with the Broncos, will turn 35 during the 2023 season. Webb, meanwhile, won’t turn 29 until after the regular season.

Wilson posted career worsts in completion percentage (60.5), touchdowns (16) and quarterback rating (84.4) in 2022.

There have been success stories in the past with quarterbacks making an early switch to coaching. Kellen Moore retired from playing before the age of 30 to coach with the Cowboys in 2018. He was hired as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator this offseason.
