Yorkton family worries after city left but pediatrician

Rachel Gregoire’s daughter, Alice, has been by a lot in her initial year of life. 

Alice has esophageal atresia, which means her esophagus hasn’t grown properly. She was innate incompetent to swallow and has digestive problems as a result. The one-year-old has endured mixed surgeries.

Now, a Gregoire family, who live in Yorkton, are facing another hurdle: spending additional time and income to see a pediatrician in Regina, about a two-hour expostulate from home. 

It’s a usually choice they’ve had given a finish of September when Yorkton’s only pediatrician, Rikash Jokhan, left a city for a job in Kelowna, B.C. 

Gregoire pronounced Jokhan’s depart also meant there wouldn’t be a medicine to manage a 3 pediatric beds during Yorkton Regional Health Centre. 

Gregoire, whose daughter saw Jokhan on a unchanging basis, pronounced after Jokhan told her he was leaving, she assumed the position would be filled. She’s undetermined since a city of Yorkton’s size — usually over 16,000 people — wouldn’t have entrance to a pediatrician.

“I remember meditative … Yorkton’s always had a pediatrician,” Gregoire said. “Then a center of Sep came and he said, ‘I have to impute we to a Regina pediatrician.'” 

The subsequent day she was told it would be over 4 months before she could get an appointment with the pediatrician in Regina.

The matter goes on to say the SHA is also working to yield pediatric hospital coverage on a scheduled basement in a Yorkton area while it recruits permanent positions. That coverage is not nonetheless in place.

During a new outing to Regina, Gregoire pronounced she met a pediatrician who visits First Nation communities around Yorkton. He told her he would try to stop in Yorkton to see Alice if he had time. It’s not transparent if that pediatrician is a same one a SHA is looking to yield hospital coverage, as it can’t give out a doctor’s name.

In a meantime, Gregoire will continue creation a trips with Alice to Regina.

She hopes a SHA will see a need for pediatric caring in Yorkton.

“There’s a lot of people who live here who … would’ve insincere that their child would be totally excellent if something happens and they benefaction during [Yorkton’s] hospital,” she said. “That’s not a case.”
