Inside Jim Carrey’s private romance with 32-years-younger new wife… as friends say actor was ‘exhausted’ by ‘ambitious women’ before marrying opposite of ‘career chick’

For decades, Jim Carrey seemed to have it all in Hollywood, with success, fame and fortune – and yet, he was perpetually unlucky in love.

The Canadian actor, 64, was wed to his first wife Melissa Womer, with whom he has his only child Jane, for eight years from 1987 to 1995. His second failed foray into marriage in 1996 ended in a high-profile divorce from his Dumb And Dumber costar Lauren Holly, with the pair only married for eight months before calling it quits.

Then Carrey had failed romances with two blonde beauties in quick succession: Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger, from 1999 to 2000, and Playboy cover girl Jenny McCarthy, from 2005 to 2010. 

It was at this point that Carrey seemingly became a Hollywood lothario overnight, dating a string of stunning women, such as his Kidding costar Ginger Gonzaga.

Meanwhile, he swore off marriage. In a 2008 Weekend magazine interview, he said, ‘I probably won’t get married again. If you’ve done it twice, you really should stop doing it.’ And in 2014, he reiterated this belief, telling Howard Stern he just didn’t ‘see it as necessary, at this point.’ 

So it came as a shock to fans when they learned the actor quietly married his girlfriend of four years, 32-year-old actress Min Ah, in Los Angeles in a small ceremony on September 30.

The stars were first spotted at a charity comedy show hosted by Judd Apatow in Los Angeles in February 2022 but only confirmed their relationship in February 2026 at the César Film Awards in France, where Carrey thanked Ah during his award acceptance speech.

The bond between the newlyweds appears to be very strong, according to friends, who said Ah is exactly what Carrey wants in a partner. ‘She accepts Carrey for exactly who he is. She understands his spiritual side and is in tune with that, she doesn’t work against it,’ said the source.

Carrey has for years been open about his mental health challenges, admitting to struggling with depression and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as dealing with dyslexia.

And, after starring as Andy Kaufman in the 1999 film Man On The Moon, the stress of playing a someone as psychologically complex as the comedian drove Carrey into a spiritual crisis, he revealed in the Netflix documentary Jim Andy: The Great Beyond. 

He started studying the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, while exploring Buddhism, Taoism and Christianity. In the short film, I Needed Color, Carrey said his need for answers led him to start painting in 2011, which made him experience ‘creative flooding.’

Together, Carrey and Ah explore spirituality, the source said, which has been ‘deeply enjoyable for them.’

‘The change in Jim started over 20 years ago when he realized fame and wealth were not fulfilling him, so he did a deep dive into spirituality and how his soul is connected to the universe. He talks a lot about consciousness and a higher power, which has really freed him,’ the source said.

‘He has described his massive highs, which helped fuel his comedy routines, and his deep lows. For so long he couldn’t understand his emotions. But now he is at peace and more even-keeled. He loves his painting, it calms him down. And Min supports him in all his endeavors.’

In recent years, the actor also took a major step back from the spotlight.

The last time Carrey starred in a big-budget Hollywood film was in 2014’s Dumb And Dumber To, and was also in the TV series Kidding, which ran from 2018 to 2020. In the years since, he’s only voice acted in the Sonic The Hedgehog films, with another slated for release next year.

And, according to the insider, the age difference has not been a problem for the 64-year-old actor and the 32-year-old actress due to her ‘maturity.’

‘She is much younger than Jim, over 30 years younger, but she has a maturity to her, maturity way beyond her years,’ the source said.

The ‘quiet, reserved’ Ah is markedly different than the leading women Carrey has previously romanced.

‘In the past he was with very ambitious women like Lauren and Jenny. I think it was exhausting,’ said the source.

‘Jenny really wanted to marry Jim but he said no. With Renee, it just fizzled. She works a ton, so there was not a lot of time for romance.

‘I think Jim felt pushed around by some of the famous women he dated. They have a tough side. So then he just started dating different pretty girls, and having fun, until he got tired of that too.’

In contrast, Ah is ‘gentle,’ said the source. ‘She does not push for anything, she takes his lead, which just works.’

‘She has not really acted in films for a while so she is not a hyper career chick.’ 

Ah’s last project was 2016’s TV movie Girlfriends Of Christmas Past.

‘That is why he is so happy, because there is no pressure to go to parties or be more, she doesn’t run out for every audition. They are chill,’ the source continued. ‘He famously said he has “enough” now, and he truly means it.’

These days, Carrey appears to be reveling in his quieter life away from the limelight. After all, he is not the blockbuster-chasing, red-carpet dynamo that he once was. 

‘Jim is not the person he was 20 years ago. He used to be hyper driven, but now he is much more centered and relaxed,’ said the source. ‘Still funny as heck, just more grounded overall.’

And, the source added, ‘all of his friends, like Chris Rock and Adam Sandler, they are all so proud of Jim’s evolution and they absolutely support him.’

As for having kids with Ah, Carrey, the source said, may very well leave that door open.

‘You never know with that guy,’ said the source. ‘Never say never when it comes to Jim.’
