I Dream of Jeannie icon Barbara Eden, 95, breaks silence on ‘nasty’ sudden illness which forced her to cancel film festival appearance
I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden has spoken out after sparking worldwide concern for her health due to dropping out of a film festival amid a ‘sudden’ illness.
The beloved actress, who turned 95 last month, was forced to drop out of the Cinecon Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles at short notice over the weekend, where she was set to appear and receive the Cinecon Legacy Award.
Event organizers announced that morning via Facebook she couldn’t be there in person and said Eden had been hit by a mystery sudden illness.
However, Eden took to Instagram to reveal it was in fact ‘nasty side effects’ from a new medication, and not illness, that had forced her to cancel her appearance.
She wrote: ‘It’s okay everyone! I’m okay!
‘Oh, my goodness there has been a bit of miscommunication. I’m not suffering from an illness; my doctor very recently prescribed a brand-new medication that turned out to have some nasty side effects.

Eden achieved global stardom in the 1960s when she was cast in the title role of the classic fantasy sitcom I Dream of Jeannie
‘Due to the discomfort, my doctor ordered me to remain at home until it can be sorted out.
‘What awful timing for this to happen! My deepest appreciation to everyone for the concern.
‘This is just a speedbump! I expect to be out and about as soon as I’m given the go-ahead. Again, my love and thanks to everyone for all the concern.’
A statement from the event organizers read in full: ‘We’re sorry to share that, due to a sudden illness, Barbara Eden will no longer be able to appear in person at Cinecon tonight,’ their post began.
‘Barbara is deeply regretful that she had to cancel at the last minute, as she had been very much looking forward to seeing everyone and celebrating with us,’ they continued. ‘We know how many of you were excited to welcome Barbara. We appreciate your understanding and join you in sending her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.’
The Daily Mail has reached out to Eden’s representative for comment but has not yet received a response.
Organizers assured fans that singing and acting legend Pat Boone, 92, would accept the award on her behalf following a screening of their 1961 musical All Hands on Deck.
The two reunited in 1963 to star in the dark late-period film noir, The Yellow Canary, which was a striking departure for Eden and Boone, both of whom were primarily associated with lighter fare.
The Cinecon Classic Film Festival is a five-day film festival and film-collecting fan convention that’s been held over Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles since 1964.

This year’s event is taking place at the Landmark Nuart Theatre and concludes on Monday.
Other notable stars being honored included Nancy Kwan, 87, Lainie Kazan, 86, and Anna Maria Alberghetti, 90, who was also unable to attend in person.
Eden achieved global stardom in the 1960s when she was cast in the title role of the classic fantasy sitcom I Dream of Jeannie about a US astronaut (Larry Hagman) who discovers an ancient bottle on a deserted island and releases a 2,000-year-old female genie.
The character she played with such zeal was famous for her pink harem outfit, her vibrant glass bottle and signature head-nod and arm-folding blink to invoke her genie powers.
Eden hasn’t played the television genie since the final episode aired in 1970 but still likes to engage with fans of the classic sitcom and recalled a time when three young men came to her door on Halloween dressed as her signature character.
‘Now, I don’t encourage this at all, but I remember these three young men from college came to my front door, and they were all dressed as Jeannie. They were just having fun being Jeannie with the ponytail, the pink pants – everything. That was fun. Strange, but fun!’
‘The amount of happiness and warmth I feel when I think about “Jeannie” is immeasurable,’ Eden shared in a September 2025 Instagram post.

‘Working with Larry [Hagman], Hayden [Rorke], Billy [Daily], Emmaline [Henry]… it was such a magical time. I never would have thought that Jeannie would still be with me, always, right over my shoulder after all these years. Yet, she’s still there! I wouldn’t have it any other way!’
Eden also starred in Flaming Star (1960), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961), The Brass Bottle (1964), which helped her land the Jeannie role, the TV series How to Marry a Millionaire (1957-1959) based on the popular film starring Marilyn Monroe, and Harper Valley PTA, both the 1978 film and the television series that followed.
Eden previously shared how ‘important’ it is to keep busy above all else.
She told Fox News Digital in 2024: ‘I think if I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I would go out and find a job just to keep myself going and be part of civilization… If you don’t try, you’re not going to be doing anything. That’s not good. I say, just be busy. Be productive. That’s so important… It’s important to me.’
The star has been married to third husband Jon Eicholtz since 1991. She was previously wed to Charles Donald Fegert from 1977 to 1982 and Michael Ansara from 1958 to 1974.
