Travelers boarding a plane this holiday season will find plenty of free in-flight entertainment, headlined by a long lineup of holiday movies.
Haven’t had a chance to catch “Elf” yet this year? American, Delta, Southwest, Alaska and JetBlue have you covered.
Miss mischievous Macaulay Culkin in the “Home Alone” classics? You’ll find one or more of them on several airlines.
Ditto, “Love Actually,” the British ensemble film featuring a dance scene Hugh Grant recently said was excruciating to perform.
And if you haven’t had enough of those syrupy Hallmark holiday movies, which have been playing since October, you’ll see some of those offered, too.
Airlines carefully curate their movie lineups, even polling passengers. For the past few years, Delta has asked its Twitter followers to vote on their favorite holiday films. The winner this year: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The 2000 Jim Carrey film marks the first time the Green Guy has been on a Delta flight since 2015.
Keep in mind that you’ll either watch the movies on your phone, tablet or laptop (make sure you download the airline’s app before the flight if using a phone or tablet) or on a seatback screen.
It all depends on the airline and, in some cases, the type of aircraft. Delta has more than 700 planes with seatback screens, JetBlue Airways has them on all of its flights, while Southwest has none.Â
American has an online tool that lets you see what’s playing on your flight, even if you haven’t booked yet, and whether you will watch on your own device, a seatback screen or, gasp, one of those old overhead screens.
If you’ll be watching on your own device, make sure it’s fully charged and bring a portable charger if you have a long flight and the airline lacks in-seat power ports.
