Polls: Voters in Arizona, Maine, Tennessee disapprove of Senate tax plan

A trio of new polls out Wednesday show that voters in three states are opposed to the current tax plan backed by Senate Republicans, and believe that the proposed overhaul mostly benefits the wealthy.
The polls, conducted by Democratic pollster Hart Research Associates and provided to USA TODAY by the liberal advocacy group Americans for Tax Fairness, found that many voters in Maine, Arizona and Tennessee disapprove of the tax plan.
- In Maine, 53% of surveyed voters said they disapproved of the current plan, while only 22% approved.Â
- In Arizona, 44% disapproved and 26% approved.
- In Tennessee, 47% disapproved and 37% approved
According to Hart Research, the voters who opposed the legislation in each state came to roughly the same conclusion: The plan favors the wealthy and didn’t reduce their own taxes.
The House passed a tax overhaul last week that dramatically cuts the top corporate rate. It also lowers rates for individuals and families, but takes away deductions and credits.

Senate Republicans are working on their own version, which leadership said will include a repeal of the Obamacare mandate that everyone have health insurance. That legislation will be brought to the floor after Thanksgiving.
The polls were conducted this week, surveying 400 registered voters in each of the states.
