The lead industry started attacking victims of childhood lead poisoning more than half a century ago. In 1955, Manfred Bowditch, the director of health and safety for the Lead Industries Association, a trade group, described childhood lead poisoning as primarily a “slum problem†for which “the only real remedy lies in educating a relatively uneducable category of parents,†according to research cited in a book by Mona Hanna-Attisha, the doctor in Flint, Michigan, who identified the crisis in her city four years ago.Â
