Buzzy happenings inside and outside the Capitol: State of the Union 2018

  • January 31, 2018

As Trump traveled to the U.S. Capitol to deliver the address, hundreds of protesters booed and jeered his motorcade.

First lady Melania Trump traveled to the address — separately from her husband. That set tongues a wagging, considering she scrapped plans to travel with him last week to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, following a Wall Street Journal report about an alleged payoff to a porn star who had claimed to have had an affair with her husband.

But what was she wearing, you ask? An all-white outfit of Dior cropped-pants suit, Dolce Gabbana blouse and Christian Louboutin heels.

During the speech, President Trump took a veiled shot at NFL players kneeling for the national anthem. He announced an order to keep Guantanamo Bay detention center open.

And a standing ovation by members of both parties greeted the parents of Otto Warmbier, a college student who was released last year in a coma after 18 months of detention in North Korea. He died soon after.

“You are powerful witnesses to a menace that threatens our world, and your strength inspires truly us all,” Trump said, as Fred and Cindy Warmbier wept during applause. “Tonight, we pledge to honor Otto’s memory with total American resolve.”

wore kente cloth to protest Trump’s “shithole” comment about African countries.

On Twitter, some former Obama aides accused him of lifting a phrase hailing a “new American moment” from a Hillary Clinton speech in 2010. And his clapping for himself became a thing.

“Please tell me someone is counting the number of time Trump applauds himself!” wrote Jennifer Duffy, senior analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

The Democratic response to the address, meanwhile, drew comparisons to Barack Obama. That could be because Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy’s enunciation, cadence and some of his word choices (let me be clear, audacity) sounded A LOT like the former president.

If disaster had befallen the Capitol and there were no survivors, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue would have been the designated survivor.

And finally, ICYMI, one alpaca and five llamas!
