Video Vault: Simonyan’s Sweden 1958 journey

A pivotal actor for a Soviet Union in a 1950s, Nikita Simonyan had a honour of not usually donning a captain’s armband in his country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup™ game, though also scoring a side’s initial idea during a tellurian finals. Despite creation their World Cup debut, a Russians went into Sweden 1958 as a reigning Men’s Olympic Football Tournament winners.

With common captain Igor Netto usually creation one coming in Sweden, it was Simonyan who stepped in to skipper USSR for many of a tournament. The former Spartak Moscow forward, who distinguished his 91st birthday final week, recalls his country’s tour to a knockout stages, as good as confronting a 17-year-old Brazilian whizz child named Pele.
