It looks like Samsung is planning a more affordable Galaxy Note 8

The reason why the Note 8 is so expensive is that it delivers the best of everything Samsung has to offer. It sports jaw-dropping design, an even larger Infinity Display, and high-end specifications — including Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor and a whopping 6GB of RAM. If Samsung was to cut back just a little bit, the handset could be cheaper.

And it looks like that’s exactly what the South Korean company is planning. A filing submitted to Chinese regulator TENAA reveals Samsung has already developed a version of the Note 8 with 4GB of RAM. All other specifications remain the same, but that small change could mean that a more affordable version of the device becomes available in certain markets.

Right now, it’s unclear which markets — other than China — this handset could be destined for. We should also remember that a regulatory filing doesn’t guarantee a product launch, so even though Samsung is seeking approval, there’s still a chance this version of the Note 8 will be scrapped. Nevertheless, it offers hope for those who cannot afford the 6GB version of the flagship phablet.

In the U.S., the Note 8 will cost you at least $930 on contract. In comparison, a Galaxy S8+ is currently priced around $850. If the price doesn’t put you off, you can pre-order yours today from all major carriers and many smartphone retailers ahead of delivery on September 15.
