Planet of the Apes game in the works – Would you believe that movie tie-ins are now retro?

Are we nostalgic for film tie-ins now?

A decade and a half has passed since the peak days of EA and Ubisoft cranking out constant streams of licensed movie tie-ins. I’ll never forget the likes of Batman Begins and Hulk racing to the market just to make a quick buck on the popularity of a film.

As to their quality, let’s just say that we can’t all be Goldeneye 007.

Thankfully, this trend was kicked to the curb about a decade or so ago when developers realized they could make crappy licensed games on smartphones for a fraction of the price and a much lower risk. Big budget tie-ins vanished overnight in the gaming world with Ubisoft’s Avatar game and SEGA’s Marvel lineup of Thor and Iron Man often seen as the endpoint.

Which is why I had to do a double take when I saw that somebody was making a big budget Planet of the Apes game in the year 2017. The peak of bad movie-ties ins are now over a decade removed from the present, and while I won’t comment on the quality of the game from those trailers alone, seeing it in action almost makes me feel nostalgic for sifting through discount bins at EB Games or Funcoland, looking for a gem in the pits of 24: The Game, Finding Nemo, and Spongebob Squarepants.

Wow, that’s how old I’m feeling. Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this fall.
