WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain is headed back to Arizona to undergo treatment for his brain tumor, his office announced Friday.

“On Monday, July 31, he will begin a standard post-surgical regimen of targeted radiation and chemotherapy,” according to a statement from his office. “During that time, Senator McCain will maintain a work schedule. He plans to return to Washington at the conclusion of the August recess.”

The Arizona Republican senator announced that he had been diagnosed with a primary brain tumor last week, which was discovered during cranial surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye.

McCain flew back to Washington earlier this week to cast a vote to bring legislation that would repeal Obamacare to the Senate floor. But early Friday morning, his “no” vote was pivotal in bringing down Republicans’ “skinny repeal” bill.

“The vote last night presents the Senate with an opportunity to start fresh,” McCain said Friday. “It is now time to return to regular order with input from all of our members — Republicans and Democrats — and bring a bill to the floor of the Senate for amendment and debate.”
